Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Calling it a “massive conspiracy,” he alleged that the incident reflects a deteriorating political atmosphere in the country.
Abhishek Banerjee was reportedly “roughed up” during his visit to meet families affected by post-poll violence. Following the incident, he complained of pain in his neck and back and was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata for medical examination. Doctors later stated that his injuries were superficial and not serious, though he was kept under observation for precautionary reasons.
Reacting to the incident, Akhilesh Yadav said such attacks on political leaders point to an attempt to intimidate opposition voices. He alleged that the BJP was responsible for creating an environment of fear and political unrest, and demanded strict action against those involved in the incident.
“The attack is not an isolated event but part of a larger conspiracy to suppress democratic voices,” he said, adding that the central government should ensure proper security for leaders across political parties when they visit sensitive areas.
The TMC has also raised concerns over security lapses during the visit, while West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned both the arrangements and the hospital response after the incident. Opposition parties, however, have denied any involvement and dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
Meanwhile, hospital authorities in Kolkata confirmed that Abhishek Banerjee remained stable throughout treatment and did not suffer any major injuries. He was discharged from intensive observation after routine examinations showed no serious complications.
The incident has triggered a political war of words between parties, with leaders trading allegations over responsibility and intent. Police have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and security arrangements in the area are expected to be reviewed.
As the investigation continues, the episode has further intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with both ruling and opposition parties framing the incident within a broader narrative of confrontation ahead of upcoming political developments.
