The Budget Session of Parliament began on Monday but it was not just about numbers and policies. The Opposition stormed the House with slogans over the tragic stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj where 30 people lost their lives during the second ‘Amrit Snan’ on Mauni Amavasya last week.
Kumbh pe jawab do was the cry as Opposition leaders demanded a discussion on the issue, accusing the government of hiding the death toll. Similar protests had happened on Budget Day too.
As Nirmala Sitharaman presented Union Budget 2025, members of Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party and other Opposition leaders staged a token walkout from the Lok Sabha, claiming the real number of deaths was much more than what the government said.
"Oppsoition's behaviour condemnable...Deliberate disruption of Parliament,' Rijiju said.
Maha Kumbh Mela is the world's biggest religious congregation where millions of devotees gather together. Now it has become a political issue where Opposition questions the preparedness and response of the government.
