PM Modi congratulates Trump on historic win

PM Modi spoke to US President Donald Trump on Monday. This was the first call since Trump took over as US President.

PM Modi congratulated Trump on his US Presidential elections.

"Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security," PM Modi said.

This is the second call between PM Modi and Trump after he won. First was on November 6, the day after he won.

Talks were taking place as discussions are on over immigration and trade rules in US which were Trump’s key poll plank.

Trump administration is expected to implement US-centric trade measures, India will have to lower trade barriers or face increased tariffs which will impact Indian industries like IT, pharma and textiles which are majorly exported to US market.

A few days ago Trump had threatened Brics nations including India of 100% tariffs if the bloc moves ahead with plans to replace US dollar.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar had clarified India’s stand on dollar replacement saying India has never supported de-dollarisation and there is no plan for Brics currency.

On H-1B visa, Trump has taken a balanced view during a joint press conference at the White House with Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son and Open AI CEO Sam Altman.

US has raised concerns over irregular migration, India has said it will accept illegal migrants from US only after verifying their Indian origin and any talk of number of such undocumented people it’s willing to take back is premature.
