A leader of the Samajwadi Party has been booked in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district over allegedly objectionable remarks made against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, police officials said on Monday.
According to police sources, the case was registered after a complaint accused the Samajwadi Party leader of making controversial statements against the Chief Minister during a public interaction. The remarks reportedly sparked outrage among local political workers and supporters of the ruling party.
Officials said an FIR was lodged under relevant sections related to promoting enmity, disturbing public peace and making objectionable statements. The matter is currently under investigation, and police are examining video clips and other evidence linked to the alleged remarks.
The incident took place in Kushinagar district, where political tensions between local leaders of rival parties have remained high ahead of upcoming political activities in the state. Authorities said legal action was initiated after the complaint was verified and preliminary inquiries were conducted.
Police officials stated that maintaining law and order remained the priority and warned against the use of provocative or inflammatory language in public speeches or political programmes. They added that further action would depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Meanwhile, local workers of the ruling party criticised the remarks and demanded strict action against the accused leader. Some BJP supporters staged protests and submitted memorandums to district officials, alleging that the comments were disrespectful and intended to create political unrest.
On the other hand, members of the Samajwadi Party claimed that the case was politically motivated and accused the state administration of targeting Opposition voices. Party leaders argued that criticism of the government should not be treated as a criminal offence and demanded a fair probe into the matter.
The development has once again highlighted the increasingly heated political atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh, where verbal clashes and legal complaints between leaders of rival parties have become frequent in recent months.
Political observers believe such controversies often escalate quickly in the state due to intense political competition and strong public mobilisation by party workers. Similar incidents involving remarks by political leaders have previously led to protests, FIRs and heated exchanges between the BJP and Opposition parties.
As the investigation continues, police officials have appealed to political leaders and supporters to maintain restraint and avoid statements that could disturb communal harmony or public order.
