The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the party arranged free “special trains” from Surat to West Bengal to influence voters ahead of the crucial Assembly elections.
According to reports, TMC MP Derek O'Brien submitted a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, claiming that the BJP, including its Gujarat unit, facilitated transportation for migrant workers who are registered voters in Bengal. The complaint alleges that passengers were provided not only free travel but also food and refreshments during the journey.
The TMC has termed the move a direct violation of the Model Code of Conduct, especially significant as it reportedly took place during the 48-hour silence period before the first phase of polling. The party argued that such arrangements amount to inducement and could unfairly influence electoral outcomes.
In his complaint, O’Brien also referred to a social media post showing a train departing from Surat, allegedly arranged by BJP workers. The post claimed that local BJP members in Gujarat were accompanying passengers and encouraging them to vote against the TMC. The party has described this as a “propaganda exercise” aimed at mobilising support in favour of the BJP.
Further, the TMC raised concerns over the alleged use of Indian Railways for partisan purposes. Since the railways operate under the Union government, the party argued that using such infrastructure for political gain would constitute misuse of state resources.
The party has urged the Election Commission to take strict action against the BJP leaders involved and to include the expenses incurred for these “special trains” in the election expenditure of the concerned candidates.
The BJP, however, has denied the allegations, reportedly describing the claims as an attempt to target legitimate voter mobilisation efforts.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where campaigning has intensified ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. With both major parties trading accusations of poll code violations, the role of the Election Commission is expected to come under close scrutiny in the coming days.
