DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was detained by police from his residence in Chennai on Tuesday following a controversy over remarks he allegedly made about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Vijay and actor Trisha Krishnan.

Police action came after a case was registered against Udhayanidhi over comments made during a public rally in Thanjavur linked to the Cauvery water issue. His remarks, which were widely interpreted as a reference to the relationship between Vijay and Trisha, triggered strong criticism from the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and supporters of the Chief Minister.

According to reports, police reached Udhayanidhi’s residence in Chennai and took him into custody for questioning. The development quickly became a major political flashpoint, with supporters and party workers gathering outside his residence as police personnel were deployed in the area.

The controversy centres on comments Udhayanidhi made while addressing a gathering during the Cauvery water dispute. His remarks were interpreted by critics as being sexually suggestive and derogatory towards Trisha. TVK leaders condemned the statement and accused the former deputy chief minister of crossing political and personal boundaries.

The DMK, however, has rejected the allegations. The party has maintained that Udhayanidhi did not directly mention Trisha in his speech and accused the ruling TVK government of using the police machinery for political purposes. The party has described the case and detention as politically motivated.

The episode comes at a time when relations between Udhayanidhi and Vijay have become increasingly hostile following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Vijay, the popular actor-turned-politician and chief of the TVK, is now the state’s Chief Minister, while Udhayanidhi leads the Opposition.

Political tensions between the two sides have already spilled into the Assembly, with both leaders trading sharp remarks over the functioning of the new government and several policy issues. Udhayanidhi has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the Vijay-led administration.

The latest police action has therefore added a fresh layer to the growing political confrontation in Tamil Nadu. With the case now under investigation, attention is likely to remain focused on the exact allegations, the legal sections invoked against Udhayanidhi and the next steps by the police and courts.

The incident has also reignited debate over the limits of political criticism and the use of personal references in public speeches, particularly as Tamil Nadu’s new political landscape continues to take shape.
