Udhayanidhi Stalin has once again triggered political controversy after stating that Sanatana Dharma promotes social division and “must be abolished,” remarks that drew sharp reactions from political parties and religious groups across the country.
Speaking at a public event, the DMK leader alleged that Sanatana Dharma was rooted in discrimination and inequality. He claimed that such ideologies divide people on the basis of caste and social hierarchy and therefore should not continue in a modern democratic society.
Udhayanidhi said his comments were aimed at opposing practices that encourage discrimination and injustice. He argued that his criticism was ideological in nature and not directed against any particular religion or community. However, the remarks quickly sparked strong criticism from leaders of several parties, especially the BJP.
Leaders of the ruling party accused the Tamil Nadu minister of insulting Hindu beliefs and hurting religious sentiments. BJP leaders demanded an apology and alleged that the comments reflected the anti-Hindu mindset of the DMK leadership. Several Hindu organisations also condemned the statement and called for legal action against him.
The controversy revived memories of a similar political storm in 2023 when Udhayanidhi Stalin had compared Sanatana Dharma to diseases such as dengue and malaria, saying they should be eradicated. Those remarks had triggered nationwide outrage and multiple complaints were filed against him in different states.
Defending his latest comments, DMK leaders said the party has historically opposed caste discrimination and social inequality. They argued that the minister was speaking against oppressive social practices and not attacking religious faith. Some leaders within the INDIA alliance also backed his right to express ideological views, though a few Opposition figures distanced themselves from the wording of the statement.
Political analysts believe the remarks could once again intensify debates around religion, caste and free speech ahead of key political developments in the country. The issue is also expected to deepen the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and DMK at the national level.
Meanwhile, social media platforms witnessed heated reactions from both supporters and critics of the statement. Hashtags related to Sanatana Dharma and Udhayanidhi Stalin began trending shortly after videos of the speech surfaced online.
Legal experts noted that controversial political speeches involving religion often lead to police complaints and political mobilisation, though courts generally examine whether the remarks amount to deliberate incitement or protected political expression.
The latest controversy has once again placed the debate over religion, social reform and political rhetoric at the centre of national political discussion.
