A fresh political controversy has erupted after Udhayanidhi Stalin revived his earlier criticism of “Sanatan Dharma,” saying it should be “eradicated,” a remark that has drawn sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The statement has once again ignited a national debate, with political parties taking opposing sides.

Udhayanidhi, a senior leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and a minister in the Tamil Nadu government, reiterated his ideological stance during a recent public address. He argued that the concept of “Sanatan” promotes social inequality and discrimination, and therefore should be opposed. His remarks echo a similar statement he made in 2023, which had also triggered widespread backlash and legal scrutiny.

The BJP was quick to condemn the statement, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments and targeting Hindu beliefs. Several BJP leaders demanded an apology and called for strict action, stating that such remarks undermine social harmony and unity. The party has often positioned itself as a defender of Hindu traditions and has used the issue to criticize the DMK’s ideological framework.

The controversy has also intensified the ongoing ideological clash between Dravidian politics and Hindutva narratives. While DMK leaders defended Udhayanidhi, saying his comments were directed at social evils rather than religion itself, opposition voices argued that the language used was provocative and insensitive.

Political analysts suggest that the issue may have wider electoral implications, especially as parties gear up for upcoming state and national elections. The BJP is likely to use the remarks to consolidate support among its voter base, while the DMK may continue to frame its position as part of a broader social justice agenda.

The debate has spilled onto social media as well, with hashtags and campaigns trending on both sides. Supporters of Udhayanidhi argue that his comments highlight historical inequalities, while critics view them as an attack on faith.

This is not the first time that comments on Sanatan Dharma have led to political friction in India, reflecting the sensitive intersection of religion, politics, and identity. As reactions continue to pour in, the controversy shows no signs of subsiding soon, with both sides standing firm on their positions.
