Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, stated on Wednesday that a judicial committee functioning under the Supreme Court should investigate the Gujarat bridge collapse, which claimed at least 130 lives.

She further questioned why central agencies such as the CBI and ED are not arresting individuals accountable for the unfortunate tragedy.

She alleged that because the Gujarat government is "busy with the coming state election," it has been unable to help the families of the deceased.

"I am shocked by the incident. I expressed my condolences to the family members of those who have lost their lives...I think there should be a judicial commission under the Supreme Court to look into the Gujarat bridge collapse."

Before emplaning for Chennai, Mamata spoke to reporters at the airport in Calcutta.

"Those who have worked to renovate the bridge should be held responsible. Why the ED, CBI and other agencies are not taking action against those responsible for the collapse," she said.

Mamata is in Chennai because West Bengal Governor La Ganesan invited her to his elder brother's birthday celebration on November 3.

While criticising Gujarat's role in the tragic occurrence, Mamata refrained to answer any questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the grounds that it was his state.
