Russian forces launched one of the heaviest drone and missile attacks on Kyiv this year, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens more, according to updated Ukrainian reports. The overnight assault involved nearly 500 drones and more than 70 missiles, with residential buildings, infrastructure and several parts of the capital hit badly.
The attack came after Moscow described the strike as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian civil infrastructure. Ukraine said most of the incoming weapons were intercepted, but several ballistic missiles and drones still struck multiple locations across Kyiv. Rescue teams searched damaged apartment blocks as fires broke out in different districts.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault and again urged Ukraine’s partners to speed up the delivery of air defence systems, saying stronger protection could have saved lives. Kyiv declared a day of mourning as families waited for news of missing relatives and emergency workers continued clearing rubble.
The latest attack has deepened fears of a wider escalation as Russia continues to increase pressure on Ukraine, while Kyiv vows to respond. For civilians in the capital, the night brought another reminder that the war remains far from over.
