India enjoyed its best day so far at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu scripted history with a third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, while the country's weightlifters added two more silver medals to cap a memorable Day 4. The impressive performances lifted India's medal tally to four and reinforced weightlifting as the nation's strongest discipline at the Games so far.
Competing in the women's 48kg category, Mirabai Chanu delivered another commanding performance to claim India's first gold medal of the Glasgow Games. She lifted a Games-record total of 190kg, including 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, comfortably finishing ahead of her rivals. The victory made Mirabai the first Indian weightlifter to win three successive Commonwealth Games gold medals, following her triumphs at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. It also marked her fourth Commonwealth Games medal overall, further cementing her legacy as one of India's greatest weightlifters.
Mirabai later revealed the extent of her sacrifice, saying she had neither eaten nor drunk water for three days in order to make the required weight for the competition. Despite the physical challenge, she produced a flawless display, once again proving why she remains among the world's elite lifters.
India's medal rush continued in the men's events. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh won silver in the men's 60kg category after equalling the Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 264kg. Soon after, Raja Muthupandi secured another silver in the men's 65kg event with a combined lift of 286kg, ensuring India finished the day with three medals from weightlifting alone.
Beyond weightlifting, Indian athletes produced encouraging performances in other disciplines. Boxer Jadumani Singh defeated Pakistan's Sumama Rehman in the men's 55kg Round of 16, while Preeti Pawar advanced in the women's 54kg event with a convincing victory over Malawi's Deborah Mtenje. India's men's 4x200m freestyle swimming relay team reached the final before finishing sixth, while the country's bowlers and gymnasts experienced mixed fortunes during the day's competition.
With boxing, athletics, wrestling-inspired disciplines and several medal events still to come, India's campaign is expected to gather further momentum in the coming days. Mirabai Chanu's historic achievement has provided the perfect boost to the contingent, raising hopes of a much stronger finish as the Commonwealth Games enter a crucial phase.
