Olympic silver medallist and two-time Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu will spearhead India's weightlifting contingent at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after being named in the national squad for the multi-sport event.
The 31-year-old Manipuri star will compete in the women's 48kg category, a division in which she has enjoyed remarkable success throughout her career. Mirabai has already won three Commonwealth Games medals gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, gold at Birmingham 2022 and silver at Glasgow 2014 making her one of India's most decorated weightlifters.
Mirabai's inclusion comes after her successful return to competition earlier this year. She won the national title in Modinagar and had earlier secured a direct berth for Glasgow by claiming gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. The star lifter had also been recovering from a shoulder injury that forced her to miss the Asian Weightlifting Championships in May.
India's women's squad also includes Birmingham 2022 silver medallists Bindyarani Devi in the 58kg category and Harjinder Kaur in the 69kg division. Other selected women lifters are Gyaneshwari Yadav (53kg), Sanjana (77kg) and Martina Devi (+86kg).
In the men's section, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Lovepreet Singh will lead India's challenge in the +110kg category. He will be joined by Rishikanta Singh (60kg), M Raja (65kg), Ajaya Babu (79kg) and Dilbag Singh (94kg), with several of them set to make their Commonwealth Games debut.
The weightlifting events at the Commonwealth Games 2026 will be held from July 26 to 30 at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. India enters the competition with an impressive recent record, having topped the weightlifting medal table at both the 2018 and 2022 editions of the Games.
