India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra began his 2026 season with a fourth-place finish at the Doha Diamond League but achieved a significant milestone by securing qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Competing for the first time this year after recovering from multiple injuries, Chopra registered a best throw of 85.69 metres. While the effort was not enough for a podium finish, it comfortably met the qualification requirements for the Commonwealth Games and marked a positive return to international competition.
The men's javelin event was won by Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka, who produced a winning throw of 88.68 metres. Former world champion Anderson Peters finished among the leading contenders as Chopra narrowly missed out on the top three.
The Doha meet was closely watched as it marked Chopra’s return after a difficult 2025 season that was affected by injuries. The Olympic champion had recently admitted that competing at the World Championships while carrying a back injury was not the right decision and said he is now fully fit and focused on rebuilding form ahead of major events later this year.
Despite missing the podium, the result offers encouragement for Indian athletics fans. With Commonwealth Games qualification secured and valuable competitive experience gained, Chopra will now shift his focus to regaining peak form as he targets medals at the Commonwealth Games and other major international competitions in 2026.
