Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti sprang a surprise by naming Neymar on the bench for the Seleção's FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash against Japan in Houston, despite the veteran forward recently returning from a long injury layoff. The five-time world champions opted to stick with the same starting lineup that defeated Scotland 3-0 in their final group-stage match.
Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer, made his first appearance for the national team in nearly three years when he came on as a substitute against Scotland. However, Ancelotti decided not to risk the 34-year-old from the start, preferring to use him as an impact player off the bench while he continues to regain full match fitness after a lengthy injury absence.
Brazil lined up in their familiar 4-3-3 formation with Alisson Becker in goal, protected by a back four of Vanderson, Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhães and Guilherme Arana. In midfield, Casemiro partnered Bruno Guimarães, while Lucas Paquetá played in a more advanced role. The attacking trio featured Rayan on the right, Vinícius Júnior on the left and Matheus Cunha leading the line. The team was also without injured winger Raphinha.
Japan, meanwhile, made several changes and adopted a more defensive approach with a five-man backline in an attempt to contain Brazil's dangerous attack. Coach Hajime Moriyasu named Zion Suzuki in goal, with Takehiro Tomiyasu marshaling the defence alongside Kota Takai and Ayumu Seko. The Japanese side hoped their disciplined structure and quick transitions could help them create one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
The match carried enormous significance for both nations. Brazil entered the knockout stage as one of the favourites to win a record-extending sixth World Cup title, while Japan were chasing a historic first victory over Brazil in a World Cup knockout match. The winner was set to face either Ivory Coast or Norway in the Round of 16.
Ancelotti's decision to keep Neymar in reserve underlined Brazil's cautious approach with their star forward. Even from the bench, however, Neymar's presence provided a major boost for the South American giants as they looked to continue their march toward World Cup glory.
