Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised the national football team after Mexico secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Czech Republic in their final Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the performance as a proud moment for the country and congratulating the players for their determination and teamwork.
Mexico completed the group stage with a perfect record, winning all three matches without conceding a single goal. Although Javier Aguirre's side had already qualified for the knockout stage before kickoff, they produced another dominant display at the Estadio Azteca to finish top of Group A with nine points.
After a goalless first half, Mexico took control following the break. Mateo Chávez opened the scoring in the 54th minute before Julián Quiñones doubled the lead seven minutes later. Álvaro Fidalgo added a third goal deep into stoppage time to complete an emphatic victory. Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora also impressed with an outstanding performance, while veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa received a standing ovation after making what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance for Mexico.
Following the win, President Sheinbaum congratulated the squad and joined fans across the country in celebrating Mexico's unbeaten group-stage campaign. The result has strengthened optimism that the hosts can make a deep run in the tournament and potentially reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the country hosted the competition in 1986.
The defeat ended the Czech Republic's World Cup campaign, with the European side finishing bottom of Group A after collecting just one point from three matches. In the group's other fixture, South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 to qualify alongside Mexico for the Round of 32.
Mexico's latest victory also marked a historic achievement, as it was the nation's first-ever perfect group-stage campaign at a FIFA World Cup. The team kept three consecutive clean sheets and extended its unbeaten World Cup run at the Azteca Stadium, reinforcing its status as one of the tournament's in-form sides heading into the knockout rounds. Mexico will now face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups C, E, F, H or I in the Round of 32.
