2022 NOBEL PRIZES: A LIST OF THE AWARDEES

This week marks the announcement of the Nobel Prizes.

It's once again time for the Nobel Prizes. Committees in Sweden and Norway select winners for a number of awards in the sciences, literature, economics, and peace activities each October.

There are a total of six prizes given out, each honouring an individual or group for making ground-breaking advancements in a particular field. Prizes are awarded in the fields of physics, medicine, chemistry, literature, economic science, and peace work.

The Nobels changed during the pandemic. The Oslo celebration for the peace prize was smaller than in most years, with a small attendance, and several events were postponed in 2020 and 2021 in favour of a digital ceremony for the recipients.

According to the organisation, laureates will be invited to Stockholm in December to receive their Nobel Prize medals and diplomas, together with winners from the previous two years.

So far, this year's winners:

Each day this week, as well as again on Monday, a prize will be announced between 5 and 7 a.m. Eastern time. The official digital channels of the Nobel Prize will transmit live announcements from Stockholm and Oslo.

Physiology or Medicine

Svante Pääbo received the year's top honour in physiology or medicine on Monday. A Swedish geneticist named Dr. Pääbo won for his research on the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.

Chemistry

The award for chemistry was shared on Wednesday by Carolyn R. Bertozzi Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless for their work in click chemistry and bio-orthogonal chemistry.

Since 2000, the three chemists have been working independently to develop useful chemicals that, according to the Nobel committee, have "led to a revolution in how chemists think about putting molecules together."

The committee observed that Dr. Bertozzi is the eighth woman to receive the award, while Dr. Sharpless is the fifth scientist to get two Nobel prizes.

What awards are coming up next?

On Thursday, the winner of the literature award will be revealed.

On Friday, the recipient of the peace work award will be revealed.

On October 10, the winner of the economic science prize will be revealed.

What do the prize winners get?

The Nobel Prize winner will also receive a certificate, a medal, and a document outlining the prize money, which this year is 10 million Swedish krona, or almost $900,000 at the current exchange rate.
