At least 17 people were killed and 1,773 others injured in a series of road accidents in Punjab on August 14, 2023, the day Pakistan celebrated its 77th Independence Day. The accidents occurred in all 37 districts of the province, with Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan reporting the highest number of fatalities.

The government of Punjab has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accidents and has ordered an inquiry into the matter. It has also announced compensation for the families of the victims.

The high number of accidents is attributed to negligence of drivers, including overspeeding, overloading, and wrong overtaking. It is also noted that the roads in Punjab were in poor condition, with many potholes and uneven surfaces.

The government of Pakistan has taken some steps to address the problem of road accidents, such as launching a road safety campaign and improving road infrastructure. However, more needs to be done to reduce the number of road accidents in the country.
