Violent unrest broke out across Belfast and parts of Northern Ireland after a brutal knife attack left a man seriously injured, triggering anti-immigration protests that quickly escalated into riots. Crowds set vehicles, homes, and other property on fire as police struggled to contain the disorder.

The violence followed the arrest and charging of a 30-year-old Sudanese man in connection with a knife attack that took place in north Belfast on June 8. The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered severe injuries to his neck, head, face, and eyes. Graphic footage of the attack circulated widely on social media, sparking anger and fear among local residents. Authorities have charged the suspect with attempted murder, possession of a bladed weapon in a public place, and making threats to kill.

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of protesters gathered in several parts of Belfast. What began as demonstrations soon descended into widespread violence. Masked individuals blocked roads, attacked police, torched cars, and set a public bus on fire. Multiple homes were also targeted, forcing emergency services to rescue residents from burning buildings. Public transportation services across Belfast were temporarily suspended due to safety concerns.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister, Michelle O'Neill, strongly condemned the attacks, describing the actions of rioters as “disgusting cowardice” and denouncing the burning of family homes. She urged calm and warned against exploiting a criminal incident to spread hatred and violence. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also condemned both the stabbing and the subsequent riots, calling the knife attack “sickening” while insisting that violence on the streets could not be tolerated.

Police declared the situation a critical incident and appealed for calm. Officers faced attacks involving bricks, bottles, petrol bombs, and fireworks while attempting to restore order. Political leaders across Northern Ireland stressed that the knife attack is being handled through the legal system and warned that retaliatory violence only puts innocent lives at risk.

The unrest has heightened concerns about racial tensions and immigration-related divisions in Northern Ireland. Authorities continue to investigate both the stabbing and the subsequent riots, while additional police resources remain deployed across affected areas to prevent further violence.
