Beirut/Jerusalem: Tensions along the Israel–Lebanon border escalated once again after Israel carried out fresh air and artillery strikes in southern Lebanon, even as a fragile ceasefire arrangement remains in place. The latest military action has raised fears of renewed conflict in the already volatile region.
According to regional security sources and local reports, the strikes targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon late on Saturday night and continued into early Sunday. The areas hit are believed to be zones where armed groups maintain influence, though exact details of the targets have not been officially confirmed by Israeli authorities.
The Israeli military stated that the operations were aimed at responding to what it described as “security threats” originating from across the border. It added that the strikes were part of ongoing efforts to prevent attacks and dismantle infrastructure used by armed groups operating near the frontier.
On the Lebanese side, officials strongly condemned the strikes, calling them a violation of the existing ceasefire understanding that had been brokered to reduce cross-border hostilities. Lebanese authorities reported damage to civilian property in some border villages, though no official casualty figures were immediately released.
The escalation comes amid continued tensions involving Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based armed group and political organisation that has frequently exchanged fire with Israeli forces in recent months. While both sides had previously agreed to reduce direct confrontations under international pressure, sporadic incidents have continued along the border.
International observers have expressed concern that repeated strikes could destabilise the ceasefire framework and lead to a broader regional escalation. The United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon has reportedly increased patrols and is monitoring the situation closely.
Residents in border areas on both sides have been advised to remain cautious as security alerts remain in place. Schools and local institutions in some Lebanese villages were reported to have temporarily suspended activities due to safety concerns.
Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in the coming days, with mediators urging restraint and renewed commitment to the ceasefire agreement. However, with both sides maintaining firm positions, the situation remains highly fragile.
The latest developments highlight the ongoing instability along the Israel–Lebanon border, where periodic flare-ups continue despite repeated calls from the international community for de-escalation and long-term peace measures.
