According to the White House, US President Joe Biden called the newly appointed British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday to express his congratulations.

The leaders agreed that it was critical to cooperate in order to support Ukraine, hold Russia responsible for its aggression, confront China's challenges, and secure sustainable and inexpensive energy resources, according to the White House's readout of the call.

The special connection between the US and the UK was also reaffirmed by the two leaders, highlighting their commitment to deepen their cooperation on matters vital to the security and prosperity of the entire world, it said.

The Belfast/Good Friday Agreement's benefits were discussed, along with the need of maintaining momentum in order to reach a deal with the European Union on the Northern Ireland Protocol.

After the call, Sunak stated that the US and the UK were the closest allies.

"I look forward to working together with the US President to enhance stability across the world and continue our leading role in support of the people of Ukraine, he tweeted.
