At least 127 people were killed as riots broke out during a football match being held in Indonesia on Saturday night. The dead include police officers and children.

The soccer match was being played in the Kanjuruhan Stadium in a landlocked city named Malang located in the Indonesian province of East Java.

The Daily Star has reported that the defeat of Arema Football Club by arch-rivals Persebaya on a ground in their homeland led to a large number of their supporters storming the pitch, after which mass riots broke out. More than hundred football fans and two policemen were killed on the scene.

Many footage have circulated on social media. It showed how fans climbed over fences and tried to escape from the smoke clouds. The masses were dispersed at the incident site after tear gas was released.

The stampede continued on the streets after the chaos ended on the soccer ground.
