On Thursday, President Arif Alvi signed the document approving Lieutenant General Asim Munir's nomination as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza's appointment as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

According to Geo News, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had earlier in the day submitted President Alvi a brief appointing Munir as COAS and Mirza as CJCSC.

"President Dr Arif Alvi has promoted Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza HI(M) to the rank of General with immediate effect and appointed him as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with effect from November 27th, 2022. The President promoted Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir HI(M) to the rank of General with immediate effect and appointed him as Chief of Army Staff with effect from November 29th, 2022," said a statement issued by the President's Secretariat.

The notification stated that the promotions and appointments were made in accordance with Articles 243(4)(a) and (b) and 48(1) of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan's Constitution as well as Sections 8-A and 8-D of the Pakistan Army Act 1952, adding that the president has signed the summary that was delivered to his office today.

On November 29, Lt Gen Munir will succeed retiring COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who served as Pakistan's top spy during his six-year tenure.

Following the confirmation of their appointment as the new chief of army staff and joint chiefs of staff committee, both Lt Gens Munir and Mirza met with PM Shehbaz separately.
