Rishi Sunak became the first politician of Indian heritage to serve as the head of the British parliament after rival Penny Mordaunt completely dropped her support. Sunak, who had only recently lost the leadership contest to rival Liz Truss six weeks earlier, earned a lot of support from his party members after Boris Johnson quit on Sunday night.

By becoming the first British Prime Minister of Indian descent, the first non-white leader in Britain, and the first Hindu to hold the position, Rishi Sunak has written history. The end of the Boris leadership was precipitated by the resignation of the former Chancellor of the Exchequer in July 2022.

At 42 years old, Sunak is also the youngest prime minister in more over 200 years.

Rishi Sunak becomes Britain's third prime minister in less than two months, following Liz Truss and Boris Johnson. As the country tries to recover from years of political and economic instability, the former finance minister takes over as prime minister.

The wealthy former hedge fund boss is anticipated to implement significant spending cuts in an effort to restore Britain's fiscal credibility as the nation is being pulled into a recession by rising energy and food prices.

After Truss resigned as prime minister on Thursday in response to the opposition's renewed call for a general election, Rishi Sunak took to Twitter to declare, "I want to fix our economy, unite our Party, and deliver for our country."

Rishi Sunak had already declared his candidacy for the Tory leadership when Boris Johnson announced his resignation six weeks prior. Sunak was declared the competition's winner, but Liz Truss later won the position of prime minister, making Sunak the runner-up.

From 2020 until this summer, Sunak served as the Treasury's head, and he was able to prevent the British economy from imploding amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Coronavirus Job Retention and Eat Out to Help Out programmes, as well as the government's financial response to the Covid-19 outbreak and its repercussions on the economy, were both heavily influenced by Sunak.

In 2015, the new prime minister won his initial parliamentary election. He served as the deputy to the finance minister and managed government spending.

Before enrolling at Oxford University to study politics, philosophy, and economics, Sunak attended Winchester College. He also has an MBA from Stanford University in the United States.

Akshata Murthy, the wife of Infosys founder Narayan Murthy, and Sunak have two daughters together. Sunak was born in Southampton to East African immigrants of Indian heritage. In the 1960s, they moved to Great Britain.

Since electing to leave the European Union in 2016, which ignited a conflict at Westminster over the country's future that hasn't been settled yet, Britain has been stuck in a state of perpetual crisis.
