Submersible Carrying Five People Goes Missing While Diving to Titanic Wreck

The submersible, named Titan, was operated by OceanGate Expeditions and was carrying four paying passengers and a pilot. It lost contact with the support ship, the Polar Prince, about an hour and 45 minutes into its dive.

The search for the submersible is being led by the US Coast Guard, with assistance from the Canadian Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Newfoundland and Labrador government.

The Titan is a titanium submersible that can dive to depths of up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). It is equipped with a variety of sensors, including cameras, sonar, and a robotic arm.

The Titanic sank in April 1912 after striking an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. More than 1,500 people died in the disaster.

The wreck of the Titanic is located about 400 miles (644 kilometers) south of Newfoundland. It is a popular tourist destination, and several companies offer submersible tours of the site.

The search for the Titan is ongoing. The Coast Guard has said that it is hopeful that the submersible and its occupants will be found safe.
