Bang Kruai: Thailand is reeling from one of its deadliest mass killings in years after a 14-year-old boy went on a shooting rampage at a school outside Bangkok, killing seven people before taking his own life, police said.

The violence began at the teenager’s home in Nonthaburi province on Friday morning, where he allegedly used a handgun belonging to his grandfather to shoot and kill his grandparents. He then travelled to Debsirin Nonthaburi School, carrying the weapon and additional ammunition.

Once inside the school, the teenager opened fire during class, killing five members of the school staff. At least 23 people were injured in the attack, according to authorities, with several victims reported to be in critical condition. The shooter later turned the gun on himself and died from his injuries after being taken to hospital. Police said the teenager fired at least 26 rounds during the attack and was carrying additional ammunition. The firearm used in the shooting was legally owned by his grandfather.

The incident has shocked Thailand, coming less than four years after the country's deadliest mass shooting in 2022, when 36 people were killed in an attack at a childcare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu province. The latest shooting has renewed concerns over access to firearms and gun violence in the country. Investigators are examining the teenager’s background and possible motive. Officials have pointed to academic pressure as one factor, while reports indicate that the teenager had shown an interest in firearms and shooting games. Authorities have not, however, announced a final motive for the attack.

The shooting has also prompted renewed calls for tighter gun controls. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has expressed shock over the incident and said the government would consider stricter measures governing firearms.

The school community has been left traumatised by the violence. Classes have been suspended as families, teachers and authorities deal with the aftermath. Students and staff were evacuated during the shooting, while emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals.

Thailand has one of the highest levels of civilian firearm ownership in Southeast Asia, and previous mass shootings have repeatedly triggered debate over gun regulation and enforcement. The latest incident is expected to intensify that debate.

Police continue to investigate how the teenager obtained access to the weapon, whether anyone knew about his plans and what circumstances led to the attack. For families of the victims, however, the investigation offers little immediate comfort as they mourn those killed in an attack that has once again shaken Thailand’s sense of security.
