Global Heatwave Linked to Climate Change Intensifies

From June to August, the world experienced record-breaking heatwaves, causing widespread disruption and health hazards across multiple continents. According to climate scientists, the scorching temperatures were driven by climate change, making such events at least three times more likely.

Regions across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa faced soaring temperatures, with some areas reaching highs never seen before. Cities like Phoenix in the U.S. and Madrid in Spain recorded consecutive days of over 40°C, while nations like India and Algeria struggled under extreme heat conditions.

The impacts were severe: wildfires raged through southern Europe, droughts intensified in the Horn of Africa, and hospitals reported spikes in heat-related illnesses. Vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, faced heightened risks of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Climate scientists from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have stated that without urgent global action, such extreme weather patterns will only become more frequent. They emphasized the need for immediate reductions in carbon emissions to slow down the warming trend and prevent future disasters.

Governments around the world are being urged to take stronger action to mitigate the effects of climate change and prepare for the challenges posed by a rapidly warming planet.
