Power Workers Halt Operations in Solidarity

Power sector employees and engineers across India suspended work with effect from Tuesday by one hour to show solidarity with their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh. The protest was organized by the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers, and it was a nationwide solidarity expression against the privatization and unfavorable policy changes.

Power employees in different cities demonstrated while raising their voices against the government's plans for privatizing electricity distribution. According to the protesters, this would result in insecurity of jobs along with high electricity tariff bills for consumers.

The strike gained special significance in states like Uttar Pradesh, where employees were outspoken against privatization efforts by the electricity department. Rajasthan and workers from Chandigarh said that they also had the same feelings about depriving them of public sector control over essential services.

The National Coordination Committee reiterated that privatization would lead to disbenefit to both employees and consumers alike as public services would be run for profit. "This is not only about jobs he is talking about, but about people having affordable and equitable power supply for all," stated one of the protest organizers.

The hour-long suspension on Tuesday should remind everyone of the problems the power sector has been facing, where workers are calling upon policymakers to engage in serious dialogue. For many, today was a collective show of standing up for fairness and public interests.
