PT Usha Warns Sports Ministry: Bill May Trigger IOC Sanctions

PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has raised concerns over the sports ministry’s proposed bill, warning it could lead to severe sanctions from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). According to Usha, the bill’s clauses might violate key IOC regulations, potentially jeopardizing India's participation in global events.

In a recent statement, Usha emphasized that while reforms are necessary to improve the country’s sports administration, any changes must align with international standards. "We must be cautious not to trigger unnecessary issues that could affect our athletes," she said. The IOA chief further argued that the bill, in its current form, might be seen as a governmental intrusion, something the IOC has been critical of in the past.

Sources indicate that Usha has already communicated her concerns to the sports ministry, urging a thorough review before finalizing the bill. The proposed legislation aims to introduce structural changes in sports governance, but critics like Usha believe it could lead to conflict with the IOC’s policies on autonomy.

This isn’t the first time India has faced warnings from the IOC. In previous instances, allegations of political interference have resulted in threats of suspending the country's membership. With the Paris 2024 Olympics on the horizon, Usha’s cautionary remarks underscore the importance of maintaining compliance with global sports protocols.

Whether the ministry will heed this advice remains to be seen, but the stakes are undeniably high. A potential IOC sanction could have far-reaching consequences, affecting India’s sports ecosystem at multiple levels.
