SRINAGAR, Mar 22: Standing the rugged weather, the threat of avalanches, and over 30 feet of snow in certain patches, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working round the clock to open the important Srinagar-Leh road through the Zojila Pass.
During a recent top-level inspection, Col Sandeep Jha, Commander of the 32 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), and the Officer Commanding of the 122 Road Construction Company (RCC) inspected the on-going snow clearance operations along the Zojila section of the highway.
This 434-kilometre road is important as it provides access to the people of Ladakh and links them with Kashmir and facilitates the presence of thousands of troops who are stationed in the Ladakh area. The road twists along the Himalayas at the Zojila Pass, which has an elevation of 11,500 feet, and passes on through the Zanskar Mountain Range at Fatula before terminating in Ladakh.
Clearing the Zojila Pass is particularly challenging each year due to heavy snowfall and severe weather conditions. The BRO teams, operating under Project Beacon, are working around the clock, using heavy snow cutters, dozers, and advanced engineering methods to ensure safe travel through the pass.
While visiting, the Commander of the 32 BRTF interacted with field engineers, machine drivers, and work teams that are working under sub-zero temperatures to accelerate snow clearing. They assessed the pace, identified any bottlenecks, and developed mechanisms to enhance effectiveness while ensuring the safety of personnel in undertaking this high-altitude operation, according to officials.
They mentioned that despite having more than 30 feet of snow in certain parts, the BRO teams are making remarkable progress, successfully traversing a number of avalanche-prone zones and tackling harsh weather conditions. The commander appreciated the tireless efforts and dedication of the team, citing the vital importance of opening the pass as early as possible for civilian and military logistics. (Agencies)
