Security forces on Tuesday averted a major tragedy after recovering an improvised explosive device (IED) from the Srinagar–Baramulla national highway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said.
According to security officials, the IED was planted by suspected terrorists along the roadside at Takiya Tapper in the Pattani area of Baramulla. The explosive device was detected during a routine patrol by security forces in the area. Acting swiftly, the forces secured the location and informed senior authorities to prevent any loss of life or damage to property.
Soon after the detection, a bomb disposal squad (BDS) was rushed to the spot to safely neutralise the IED. The area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure, and traffic movement on the highway was temporarily regulated to ensure public safety. Officials said the operation was carried out with utmost caution, given the strategic importance of the Srinagar–Baramulla highway, which witnesses heavy civilian and security movement daily.
The recovery of the IED comes less than a week ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, a period during which security agencies remain on high alert due to possible attempts by terrorists to disrupt peace and normalcy. In view of the incident, security arrangements across the Kashmir Valley have been further tightened.
Officials said intensified checking, increased patrolling, and additional deployment of security personnel have been put in place at sensitive locations to thwart any subversive activities. “The timely detection of the IED prevented what could have been a serious incident,” an official said, adding that investigations are underway to identify those responsible for planting the explosive.
Meanwhile, residents have been advised to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects or activities to the nearest security personnel. Authorities reiterated that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the public and maintain law and order across the region.
