Jammu & Kashmir is on alert as authorities issue a low-danger avalanche warning for five districts following recent heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas. The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) has specifically flagged Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Ramban districts, advising residents and visitors to exercise caution above 2,800 meters.
The warning comes after moderate to heavy snowfall earlier this week, which has destabilized snowpacks in certain regions, increasing the risk of avalanches. While the plains of the valley experience dry and cold weather, temperatures in the higher reaches have dropped significantly. Gulmarg, a popular ski destination, is witnessing sub-zero conditions, with minimum temperatures plummeting to -8°C, while Srinagar experiences foggy mornings and cold days, with real-time temperatures ranging from 10-12°C during the day to below -2°C at night.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts mainly dry weather over the next few days. However, a weak Western Disturbance is expected to approach the region by the weekend, bringing the possibility of light snowfall in isolated high-altitude areas, which could further impact avalanche-prone zones.
Authorities strongly advise against venturing onto steep slopes in the affected regions for at least the next 24 hours. Residents and tourists are urged to follow official advisories, stay updated with weather bulletins, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
With the winter season in full swing, the combination of heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and unstable slopes makes Jammu & Kashmir’s high-altitude regions particularly hazardous. Local authorities and the IMD continue to monitor conditions closely, emphasizing that preparedness and caution remain the key to avoiding accidents in these snow-laden zones.
