Nearly half of Srinagar’s households now enjoy uninterrupted electricity supply following a successful trial under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Wednesday.
The Office of the Chief Minister congratulated the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) for extending round-the-clock electricity to an additional 83 areas in Srinagar. This brings the total number of 24-hour power zones in the city to 108, benefiting approximately 1.25 lakh households nearly 48 percent of the city’s population. The successful RDSS trial recorded zero power cuts in the upgraded areas, signaling a significant step toward a more reliable power infrastructure.
Addressing the media, CM Omar emphasized that similar initiatives are being implemented across other districts of Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for all residents. He highlighted that these upgrades are part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize the state’s power distribution network, reduce technical losses, and improve overall efficiency.
The RDSS initiative focuses on replacing outdated infrastructure, installing advanced monitoring systems, and implementing smart grid solutions to prevent outages and enhance service reliability. Officials said that the success of the Srinagar trial will serve as a model for future rollouts in other urban and semi-urban areas.
Citizens and local communities have welcomed the development, noting improvements in daily life, business operations, and public services due to steady electricity. The government hopes that continued expansion of 24x7 power zones will contribute to better economic activity and quality of life across the region.
With sustained efforts, Jammu and Kashmir appears poised to transform its electricity distribution network, ensuring residents no longer face frequent interruptions and move closer to a fully reliable, modernized energy system.
