Omar Abdullah Explores Supreme Court Move for J&K Statehood

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is actively considering joining the Supreme Court case seeking restoration of statehood for the union territory. While evaluating legal options with senior lawyers from both J&K and Delhi, Abdullah emphasized that aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party remains completely off the table, citing past political alliances that, according to him, adversely affected the region.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the restoration of statehood involves a structured process, starting with administrative procedures, followed by delimitation and elections, with full statehood expected as the final step. He criticized attempts to link the statehood debate with isolated incidents of violence, calling such associations unfair to the people of J&K.

Addressing governance challenges, Abdullah pointed out delays in the functioning of the Advocate General’s office, noting that despite appointments, the office has yet to operate effectively. He also raised concerns over security arrangements, including the sudden withdrawal of high-level security from the Deputy Chief Minister.

On the tourism front, Abdullah noted a disconnect between official promotion efforts and ground realities, with parts of Kashmir still closed to tourists due to security restrictions imposed by the unelected administration. He reiterated that once full statehood is restored, the government intends to repeal the Public Safety Act through an ordinance, without waiting for legislative sessions.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Budgam bypolls are underway, with candidate announcements expected soon. Abdullah’s approach reflects a focus on legal channels, administrative reform, and regional autonomy, steering clear of past political alliances that he believes hindered development.

This move underscores the renewed push for political and administrative normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, as leaders work to restore statehood and address longstanding governance and security concerns.
