A tragic construction accident in Gurugram, Haryana, has left at least seven workers dead and more than a dozen others hospitalised after a wall collapsed at an under-construction residential project on Monday evening. Rescue teams worked through the night to clear debris and search for workers who were trapped under the rubble.
The incident occurred at the Signature Global Society construction site in Sidhrawali, located on the Gurugram–Rewari border. According to police officials, a large concrete retaining wall suddenly collapsed at around 7:30–8:00 pm, burying several labourers who were working near a basement area where a sewage treatment plant was being constructed.
Initial reports suggest that around 12 to 15 labourers were trapped when the wall gave way. The collapse was reportedly triggered by a soil cave-in that destabilised the structure and caused heavy debris to fall into the construction pit.
Local police, fire brigade teams, and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the site soon after receiving information about the accident. Rescue teams used heavy machinery, cranes, and manual digging to remove concrete blocks, iron rods, and soil from the debris. Floodlights were installed to continue the rescue operation during the night.
Several injured workers were pulled out from the rubble and immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Doctors later confirmed that seven workers had died, while at least four others remain in critical condition. Some of the injured labourers were shifted to a hospital in nearby Bhiwadi for emergency care.
Authorities have begun identifying the victims. According to officials, several of the deceased were migrant labourers working on the project. Their bodies have been kept at the district hospital for post-mortem examinations before being handed over to their families.
Eyewitnesses at the site said fellow workers initially tried to rescue the trapped labourers with their bare hands before emergency teams arrived. Family members of some workers later alleged negligence by the construction company and demanded accountability for the incident.
Officials said a probe has been launched to determine the exact cause of the collapse and to check whether safety regulations were violated at the construction site. Police indicated that legal action could be taken against the builder or contractors if lapses in construction safety are confirmed.
The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about labour safety at construction sites, particularly in rapidly expanding urban centres like Gurugram where large real-estate projects employ hundreds of daily-wage workers. Authorities said the rescue and investigation operations will continue until all missing workers are accounted for.
