Traffic Paralysis on Srinagar Jammu Highway Becomes Nightmare for Commuters

The reopening of the Srinagar Jammu National Highway for heavy vehicles has turned commuting into a nightmare for travelers. Since the end of August, several sections of the highway had been partially closed due to landslides and road damage. Recently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) repaired the damaged sections and reopened both directions for traffic.

However, instead of easing the situation, the move has led to massive traffic congestion, poor lane discipline, and unregulated two-way movement. As a result, travel time has stretched from the usual 4–5 hours to 12–15 hours. Commuters, businessmen, and patients are left frustrated and exhausted.

Ghulam Nabi, a resident of Pulwama, told Rising Kashmir, “It has turned into a parking lot, there are no rules at all.” A retired government official added, “The administration has completely lost control. Lane management should have been properly enforced.”

Locals allege that negligence and weak control by the authorities have worsened the situation. They suggest that opening a single dedicated lane in one direction and enforcing proper traffic management could solve the problem.

The situation is not only affecting commuters but also farmers and traders. Trucks carrying fruits and vegetables are stuck for long hours, causing spoilage and disrupting market supply.

Meanwhile, with no effective measures from the authorities, public anger is mounting. Commuters and business owners are demanding a swift resolution to the crisis.
