Zojila Tunnel Expected to Achieve Connectivity by Next Year

The Zojila Tunnel, recognized as one of India's most strategic infrastructure undertakings, is on track to achieve full connectivity by next year, according to the Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohamad Jaffar Akhoon. The ambitious project has witnessed accelerated progress in recent months despite formidable geographical and climatic obstacles.

During an extensive inspection of the tunnel site and the broader Zojila Axis, Dr. Akhoon, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Drass, and senior officials from Project Vijayak and the Border Roads Organisation, reviewed the current status of construction activities. Speaking to media representatives following the visit, he emphasized that teams are working with unwavering commitment to maintain momentum even as harsh weather conditions approach.

The CEC praised Project Vijayak, which operates from its headquarters in Kargil, for its consistent dedication to maintaining the critical Srinagar-Kargil transportation corridor. "Project Vijayak has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of our region's unique challenges," Dr. Akhoon stated. "Their accessibility and prompt response to our concerns have been invaluable throughout this endeavor."

With winter approaching, the administration has issued comprehensive directives to relevant agencies to maximize the operational period of the Zojila road. Dr. Akhoon outlined specific measures being implemented to counter seasonal hazards. "We have instructed teams to stockpile earth material at vulnerable locations to address potential landslips promptly," he explained. "Additionally, water seepage points must be sealed before temperatures drop to prevent ice formation, which could obstruct traffic flow."

These proactive measures reflect lessons learned from previous winters when the route experienced extended closures, severely impacting connectivity to Kargil and surrounding areas.

The highlight of the inspection was the update on excavation work at the tunnel site itself. Engineering teams briefed the CEC on substantial advancements made in boring through the mountain. The tunnel has now penetrated approximately 120 meters into the rock face, representing remarkable progress compared to the previous year when advancement ranged between 200 to 250 meters for the entire season.

"Construction activities are proceeding vigorously, and current projections indicate that breakthrough connectivity could be established by May or June next year," Dr. Akhoon informed reporters. This timeline would mark a significant milestone for the project, which has faced numerous technical and logistical challenges since its inception.

The Zojila Tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, eliminating the seasonal isolation that Ladakh experiences during winter months when the Zojila Pass remains closed due to heavy snowfall. Currently, the pass is typically accessible only from May to October, leaving Ladakh cut off from Kashmir for nearly half the year.

Once completed, the tunnel will not only enhance civilian connectivity but also strengthen logistical capabilities for defense forces stationed in the strategically sensitive region. The project is expected to reduce travel time between Srinagar and Leh substantially while ensuring year-round access to essential supplies and services.

Dr. Akhoon concluded by expressing satisfaction with the pace of work and commended the engineers and workers from Project Vijayak and BRO for their perseverance in advancing this vital infrastructure project. The successful completion of the Zojila Tunnel will represent a transformative development for the region, promising improved economic opportunities and enhanced quality of life for residents of Kargil and Ladakh.
