Death of Shivkumar Sharma, the Santoor Maestro marks the end of an era

Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, a well-known santoor player who successfully straddled the worlds of classical and film music, died of a heart attack today in Mumbai

According to his secretary Dinesh, Pt Shivkumar Sharma, one of India's most well-known classical musicians, died between 08:00 and 08:30 a.m. at his Pali Hill residence in Mumbai.


 He had been active until the end and was scheduled to perform in Bhopal the following week. He was also hospitalised for renal issues. He was on dialysis but remained active. The Press Trust of India was informed by a member of its own family. He is survived by his wife, Manorama, and sons, Rahul, also a santoor participant, and Rohit.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who mourned Sharma's death. "Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji's death has made our cultural world a poorer place.

He popularised the Santoor on a global scale. His song will continue to captivate future generations.

I recall my interactions with him with fondness.

"Shanti Om," stated the Prime Minister. Pt Shivkumar Sharma, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, was born in Jammu in 1938 and is widely considered as the first artist to perform Indian classical music on the santoor, a Jammu and Kashmir folk instrument.


The death of Pt Shivkumar Sharma affected Amjad Ali Khan, a Sarod player. He wrote flute songs for films like "Silsila" and "Lamhe" as half of the musical duo Shiv Hari.


He became the Santoor pioneer, and his contribution is \sunparalleled. For me, this is a personal loss, and I will not desert him. May his soul rest in peace. His song will live on forever!Shanti Om, "In a tweet, Amjad Ali Khan stated.


Shivkumar Sharma's death was also mourned by ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas and veteran actor Shabana Azmi. "We have lost a gem today Padma Vibhushan Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma ji Santoor virtuoso a massive loss to Indian classical song," Pankaj Udhas tweeted.

 "I was deeply saddened to learn that maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma had passed away. Of course, his sweet song will live on in our hearts, but it will be tinged with the ache of his loss. My heartfelt condolences go out to myimmediate family "Shabana Azmi posted on Twitter. 


Salim Merchant, a music composer and singer, remembered Shivkumar Sharma as one of the "finest musicians of our time."Pt Shivkumar Sharma was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, followed by the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
