Anubrata Mondal, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with a case involving the smuggling of cattle. On Friday, the agency filed a 35-page chargesheet against Mondal in a CBI court in Asansol.

Mondal is lodged in the Asansol Correctional Home while on judicial remand.

The chargesheet was submitted by the central agency to Ratna Roy Biswas, a special vacation judge, in the CBI court in Asansol.

A team of CBI officers detained the TMC's Birbhum district president on August 11 at his home in Bolpur for reportedly not cooperating with the agency's investigation into the cattle smuggling case.

Prior to his arrest, Mondal had repeatedly skipped appearing before CBI officers at their Nizam Palace headquarters in Kolkata for questioning.

According to sources, the CBI allegedly found fixed deposits of Rs 18 crore during the investigation as well as deeds to 53 properties connected to Mondal that were mentioned in the chargesheet.

Additionally, they alleged that Mondal was involved in conspiring the smuggling of cattle.

According to agency sources, the CBI charged Mondal with criminal conspiracy and abetment as well as violating other provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The agency asked for Mondal's custody trial as well, alleging that he has power and could attempt to influence witnesses if released on bail.

The alleged smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh is being looked into by the CBI.
