The idea of "One Nation, One Uniform" for police was floated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. He emphasised that this was only a suggestion for consideration and that he was not attempting to compel the states to adopt it.

Addressing a "Chintan Shivir" of state home ministers, Modi also pushed for close state-to-state cooperation to tackle crime and criminals.

He asserted that cooperative federalism was not only the spirit of the Constitution but also the responsibility of the states and the central government as a whole.

"The One Nation, One Uniform for police is just an idea. I am not trying to impose it on you. Just give it a thought. It may happen, it may happen in 5, 50, or 100 years. But let's give it a thought," Modi said.

The prime minister stated that he believes all of the police in the nation could be identical.

He argued for coordinated effort by all the agencies to address the new challenges of law and order and security. He also asked state governments to review outdated laws and update them to the present context.

Maintaining public trust in the police, according to Modi, is "very important," and the "wrongs here" need to be corrected.

According to the Constitution, law and order are a state responsibility, but they are also linked to the country's integrity and unity, he stated.

According to Modi, every state should collaborate for internal security and learn from and be inspired by one another.

"Working together of states for internal security is a constitutional mandate as well as responsibility towards the nation," he added.

The prime minister stated that all agencies, both national and state-level, should work together to ensure effectiveness, better results, and protection for the average person.

He asserted that peacekeeping is everyone's duty because development and law and order are intrinsically intertwined.

Every citizen and every family will have more power as the country's strength grows, he said.
