As part of the in-situ slum rehabilitation initiative, PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated 3,024 newly built apartments for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in Delhi. The prime minister declared that "today is a big day for thousands of slum dwellers" after launching the project for them. According to the PM, the Centre wants to transform Delhi into an opulent metropolis with all the amenities that a capital city should have.

“In line with the vision of the Prime Minister to provide housing for all, in-situ slum rehabilitation in 376 Jhuggi Jhopri clusters is being undertaken by Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The objective of the rehabilitation project is to provide a better and healthy living environment to the residents of the Jhuggi Jhopri clusters, with proper amenities and facilities,” read an official statement by Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Three of these projects have been started by the Delhi Development Authority in the neighbourhoods of Kathputli Colony, Jailorwala Bagh, and Kalkaji Extension.

Three slum clusters—Bhoomiheen Camp, Navjeevan Camp, and Jawahar Camp—located in Kalkaji are being in-situ rehabilitated throughout the course of the Kalkaji Extension Project. At the nearby empty commercial centre site, 3024 EWS apartments have been built as part of Phase I. By moving eligible residents from Bhoomiheen Camp to the recently built EWS apartments, the Jhuggi Jhopri site there would be abandoned.
