Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questions 'Agnipath' scheme: 'Armed forces a laboratory for BJP?

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned the Union government's ambitious 'Agnipath' project for recruitment to the armed services on Wednesday, adding to a chorus of voices that have raised concerns about the effort

"Why is the BJP government using the armed forces as a testing ground for its ideas?"

Is it considered a burden by the government for soldiers to serve in the army for several years?”

A tweet from the Congress's general secretary.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's tweet was in response to a news item about army recruits protesting the 'Agnipath' scheme in Bihar.

"This four-year restriction is being referred to as a ruse by young people.  “It has angered our veterans as well," she continued.

"On a topic as important as military recruitment, there was no discussion or serious consideration."

"What is the source of your obstinacy?"

Young people between the ages of 17.5 and 21 will be able to join a service of their choice - army, air force, or navy - for a four-year period under the scheme, which was introduced by defence minister Rajnath Singh and the three service chiefs.

Following that, 25% of the recruits will be retained, with the remaining 75% being discharged back into civilian life.

The new model, according to the Centre and three services, aims to reduce the age profile of the three services, ensure a fitter military, and develop a trained and vibrant workforce for employment.

Veterans and military specialists, on the other hand, have expressed alarm about the presence of warfare-trained teenagers in civil life, which they believe could lead to a law and order problem.

They've also questioned the need for contract hires on a short-term basis.

Candidates who join the armed forces as a result of this effort will be referred to as 'Agniveers.'
