Real Madrid lifted yet another Champions League trophy, but the jubilation over the victory was soon spoiled by the havoc wreaked by the chaotic crowd.

Real Madrid bagged the title of the European champion for the 14th time which is a record in itself. It defeated Liverpool 1-0 in a final that started after a delay of 37 minutes because of a severe disturbance outside the Stade de France on Saturday. The incident echoes the similar violence that took place during the European Championship final at Wembley Stadium 10 months ago.

Brazil winger Vinícius Júnior turned out to be a match-winner for the team. He applied a close-range finish in the 59th minute from Federico Valverde’s drive across the face of goal, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois took just as many plaudits by making breathtaking saves by Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

“Today nobody was going to get in my way,” Courtois said. “I was going to win a Champions League no matter what.”

The victory gave Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti a fourth European Cup title, a record for any manager in the competition’s history.
