Rescue efforts in Manipur are continuing despite bad weather; the death toll has risen to 29, and at least 34 people are still missing

Despite unfavourable weather caused by heavy rains and further landslides last night, search activities by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, SDRF & NDRF proceeded at the event site in Tupul.

Besides the 13 Territorial Army personnel & 5 civilians that were safely rescued, mortal remains of 23 Territorial Army personnel & 11 civilians have been recovered so far.

Inclement weather is affecting the search operations, officials said.

Search for the remaining 7 missing Territorial Army personnel & 21 civilians will continue.

On June 30, the landslide occurred in the district of Noney, at 107 Territorial Army Camp, near the Tupul railway construction site.

By July 2, the bodies of 34 people were recovered from the landslide-hit area while at least 28 people remained missing. Nineteen people were rescued, including 13 Territorial Army soldiers and five civilians.

Over 470 personnel, including those of the NDRF, SDRF, state police, the Assam Rifles and local volunteers, have been deployed in the search operation.

Notably, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, accompanied by top Army and civil officials, visited the disaster site Friday (July 1).

The Chief Minister has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the family of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the disaster.
