Teesta Setalvad is allegedly “not complying with the investigation,” according to Gujarat Police, who are asking for 14 days of her imprisonment

Following Teesta Setalvad’s arrest in connection with the investigation into the 2002 Gujarat riots, the Gujarat Police Crime Branch held a press conference on June 26 in Ahmedabad. The activist is not helping with the investigation, according to Chetanya Mandlik, DCP of Ahmedabad Crime Branch, thus they will ask for 14 days in detention

Mandlik also added that two out of three accused persons – Teesta Setalvad and RB Sreekumar – have been arrested and will be produced in court later in the day. Meanwhile, the police have already sought the transfer of the third accused, Sanjiv Bhatt, for custodial interrogation, he added. The Ahmedabad DCP further said that as of now, the investigation is at a primary level and strict action will be taken once the probe is done.

Additionally, DCP Chetanya Mandlik stated, “Teesta isn’t helping us out with the investigation or assisting in any way. Today, we will ask for a 14-day custody order, and the case will be thoroughly investigated. All of Teesta’s statements will be recorded when she is brought before the magistrate. We are gathering the documents from various sources and organizing them.”

The imprisonment is related to a new First Information Report (FIR) that was filed about the riots in Gujarat in 2002. In the Supreme Court petition against then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others, Teesta Setalvad and her non-governmental organization were co-petitioners with Zakia Jafri. On June 24, the court denied the plea and affirmed the green light given to PM Modi and others. Additionally, Setalvad was charged with influencing, educating, and forcing witnesses to testify on pre-written affidavits. According to Zakia Jafri’s testimony before the Nanavati Commission on August 22, 2003, Teesta Setalvad even instructed her.
