TWITTER LAYOFFS IN INDIA DRAW CRITICISM FROM IT MINISTER ASHWINI VAISHNAW

The decision by Elon Musk-run Twitter to fire its staff in India has drawn criticism from Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who claims that they should have been given a "fair time for transition."

Vaishnaw's response came as Musk let go almost half of Twitter's global workforce, including roughly 150–180 employees in India.

"We condemn the way Twitter has sacked employees in India," said Vaishnaw, adding that the employees "should have given the employees a fair time for transition".

The layoffs in India affected a variety of departments, including corporate communications, sales, and marketing.

Last Monday, Twitter employees in India lost access to their work emails, internal Slack channels, and group chats.

Those who are still employed by Twitter India are always worried that they would lose their jobs in the upcoming round, which they believe will occur sooner given Musk's intentions.

The company stated that the employee badge access to Twitter's offices has been "temporarily" shut.

Musk claimed that because Twitter was losing more than $4 million every day, there had no other option than to ruthlessly fire half of the company's employees.

"Regarding Twitter's reduction in force, unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day," Musk tweeted.

"Everyone exited was offered 3 months of severance, which is 50 per cent more than legally required," he added.

In addition, he said that due to activist groups' excessive pressure on its advertisers, Twitter's revenue has dropped dramatically.
