The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reports that on Sunday morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Tehri, Uttarakhand. According to NCS, the earthquake happened at 8:33 in the morning.

The earthquake occurred in 30.67 degrees latitude and 78.60 degrees longitude, 5 kilometres beneath the surface, 17 kilometres east-southeast of Uttarkashi.

There have been no casualties as of yet. Mild tremors were reportedly experienced in Delhi-NCR.

Over the past six years, a number of locations in Uttarakhand, including Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and others, have been frequently jolted by earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4 to 5.1 on the Richter scale. The most recent one, with a magnitude of 5.8, happened on February 6. It was strong enough to revive memories of previous such events.

One of the earth's most seismically and tectonically active regions is the Himalayan mountain range.

Between September 1 and September 30, this year, the country had as many as 17 earthquakes of small magnitudes (less than 3). During the month, there were six earthquakes in the area with magnitudes larger than 5. The report also noted that 35 earthquakes occurred inside Indian territory. There were four earthquakes in Ladakh and seven in Maharashtra during that time.

The NCS has just released a report on the September earthquakes. According to the report, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, North East India, and the Hindu Kush region saw the most of the earthquakes. A few minor earthquakes were also reported in Uttarakhand, a state in the north; in western India, in Gujrat, Rajkot, and Valsad; in Maharashtra, in Aurangabad, Satara, and Latur; and in Karnataka, in Vijayapura and Bijapur.
