The Election Commission of India has imposed strict restrictions on the movement of motorcycles and pillion riders in parts of West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, even during the daytime relaxation window from 6 am to 6 pm.

According to officials, the order prohibits the movement of two-wheelers carrying pillion riders during the specified hours, with exemptions granted only in cases of medical emergencies. The move is part of a broader effort to maintain law and order and prevent election-related violence in sensitive areas.

Authorities said that such restrictions are often enforced in regions identified as vulnerable, where there is a higher risk of intimidation, clashes, or unlawful activities during the poll period. Motorcycles, in particular, are frequently used for quick movement, making them difficult to monitor and, at times, a concern for security agencies.

The decision comes amid heightened political tensions in the state, with multiple incidents of clashes reported between rival party workers during campaigning. Security has been tightened across districts, and central forces have been deployed to ensure peaceful voting.

Officials clarified that the restriction is not a blanket ban on all bike movement but specifically targets pillion riding, which is seen as a potential risk factor during elections. Solo riders may still be allowed under certain conditions, depending on local enforcement measures.

The exemption for medical emergencies ensures that essential movement is not disrupted. People requiring urgent medical attention or transport for health-related reasons will be permitted, subject to verification by authorities.

Political reactions to the directive have been mixed, with some parties supporting it as a necessary step to curb violence, while others have raised concerns about inconvenience to the public.

As West Bengal prepares for polling, the Election Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections, with strict enforcement of security measures in sensitive zones.
