India-Pakistan relations have always been a roller coaster ride. Geopolitics and security concerns of the two neighbouring nations have generated tension more than once. One of the most significant and well-established reasons, however, is cross-border terrorism. Terrorist operations launched from Pakistani territory not only pose a threat to India but also demolish the stability of diplomatic and political ties between India and Pakistan.".
India blames terrorist attacks on several fronts like Kashmir with the direct or indirect involvement of the Pakistani army and intelligence services. Beginning with the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, to Uri, Pulwama or the recent attack in Pahalgam- names of Pakistan-based terrorist outfits have been reported behind each incident. Since these events, the Indian government has responded firmly at the diplomatic level, and has even attempted to isolate Pakistan on the international level.
Cross-border terrorism is one of India's biggest security threats, but it is also an indication of the volatility of Pakistan's internal politics and the supremacy of its military. There are accusations in the international world that the ISI and the Pakistan Army have systematically used such terrorist organizations for their own strategic agendas. Thus, all attempts towards establishing peaceful relations in democratic India have been frustrated.
Conversely, the consequences of this terrorism are not at the political or military level. It also results in distrust and hatred among both nations' ordinary citizens, as well as its influence on social and cultural affairs. The wrath and fear of the ordinary citizen are also another key reason why the India-Pakistan peace process has been blocked time and time again.
In this reality, diplomatic pressure, global cooperation and a stringent defense strategy are required to prevent cross-border terrorism. If Pakistan actually desires peace in South Asia, it should take stern action against the terror networks within its territory. And India, alongside the politics of reaction, has to step up too to eliminate this issue through multilateral discussions and global diplomatic pressure.
As long as there is cross-border terrorism, India-Pakistan relations will never be normal. And the earlier both nations can accept this reality, the easier the future will be.
