Handshake Controversy Sparks Outrage, Gautam Gambhir Slams England: " "I haven't come to please anyone."

The fourth Test between India and England ended not just in a draw, but with a fresh controversy. On the final day of the match, India’s Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were batting on 89 and 80 respectively, inching closer to their cherished Test centuries. At that crucial juncture, England captain Ben Stokes offered a handshake signaling an early draw with nearly 15 overs still remaining in the day. India’s batters politely declined the offer, choosing to continue. That moment sparked a storm, with India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir coming out strongly against England’s approach.

In a fiery post-match press conference, Gambhir asked pointedly:

“Have we reached a point where a player batting on 90 or 85 isn’t allowed to complete a hundred? If an England player had been in that position, would they have walked off the field after a handshake? Why should our players be denied such a moment?”

Gambhir emphasized that Jadeja and Sundar had earned their scores through determination and hard work.

“This is not just about runs or batting time. It’s about respect, about the value of effort, and about honoring a cricketer’s career-defining moment. A century isn’t just a statistic it’s an emotional milestone.”

He further criticized Stokes’ gesture, saying:

“When the match result is no longer in doubt, trying to rob someone of a personal achievement is not in the spirit of the game. In fact, it shows a lack of grace. What’s the harm in allowing a player to reach their hundred?”

The controversy has stirred sharp reactions across social media and among former cricketers. Many have called England’s conduct “unsporting” and “shameless,” accusing them of attempting to deny Indian batters a deserved milestone simply because the match had no further competitive meaning for them.

Gambhir made it clear: Team India doesn’t believe in “giving up” easily neither in the game, nor in values.

“As a coach, I will always support my players for standing up for what’s right. They did exactly what needed to be done honoring the spirit of effort and achievement.”

This incident has reignited conversations about sportsmanship, respect, and fairness in the game. Cricket is not just about wins and losses it’s about character, too. And as Gambhir rightly pointed out, every player deserves the dignity of completing their journey when they’re so close to a landmark regardless of the match situation.

In the end, this was more than just a disagreement over a handshake. It was a statement about dignity in sport, and the importance of recognizing every player's right to celebrate their hard-earned moments.
