Following its exclusion from the recently finished Birmingham 2022 Games, shooting and para-shooting will be included in the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Victoria.
Wrestling and archery are still not included on the list of sports that was made public by the Commonwealth Games Federation on Wednesday. In the history of the Commonwealth Games, shooting has been one of India's most successful sporting events.
On October 4, the Commonwealth Games Federation, the Andrews Labor Government, and Commonwealth Games Australia released a list of the athletes who will compete in the 2026 Games, including some debutants.
Victoria 2026 will take place from March 17 to March 29, 2026, and it will feature four regional hubs in Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, and Gippsland to offer a multi-city concept that appeals to people all throughout Victoria.
The Commonwealth Games Federation and other important international sporting federations will be consulted in order to ascertain whether Victoria 2026's proposed addition of parasport disciplines for golf, coastal rowing, and the road (cycling) race is feasible.
The already impressive sports lineup has been expanded to include golf, 3x3 basketball, 3x3 wheelchair basketball, BMX racing, shooting, para-shooting, mountain bike cross-country, track cycling, and para-track cycling, while Coastal Rowing, golf, and BMX will make their Commonwealth Games debuts.
Commonwealth Games Australia President Ben Houston remarked, "Commonwealth Games Australia is delighted with the inclusion of the new sports and disciplines for Victoria 2026 to take the Games into an exciting new age."
"Over the following four years, this is expected to motivate a brand-new generation of athletes to fulfil their potential. The athletes who will compete for Australia in pursuit of glory in 2026 are eagerly anticipated by CGA."
Dame Louise Martin, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, welcomed the news and the inclusion of new sports in the Commonwealth Sports Movement.
The extra disciplines suggested by Victoria 2026 complete an intriguing and diverse lineup, and we are happy to confirm the Sports Program for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, added Martin.
With an extensive, fully integrated Para-sport Program, the debuts of Coastal Rowing, Golf, and BMX, the return of Shooting, and the electrifying 3x3 Basketball, the Games are expected to be competitive and action-packed.
The Program is based on the CGF's 2026–30 Strategic Roadmap, which gives hosts more freedom to suggest new sports, particularly those with unique local relevance that will enhance cultural showcasing and boost community engagement.
